Ontario Fertility Program: Updates and Support for Families

The Ontario government announced on October 24, 2024, a significant new investment in the Ontario Fertility Program—expanding the allocation of IVF cycles across the province— along with the introduction of a new tax credit aimed at improving access to publicly funded fertility treatments, including in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Details on how the increased allocation will be implemented have not yet been provided.

New Tax Credit for Fertility Treatments (Effective January 2025)

As of January 2025, Ontario residents can take advantage of a new tax credit that will refund 25% of eligible fertility treatment costs, up to a maximum of $5,000 per year. Here’s what you need to know:

  • This tax credit is available exclusively to Ontario residents.
  • The tax credit applies retroactively from January 1, 2025, covering eligible fertility treatment expenses incurred between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025. Save all receipts for fertility treatments during this period to ensure you can claim this credit.
  • It covers costs like IVF cycles, fertility medications, diagnostic testing, and travel for treatment.

For example, if you spend $20,000 on privately funded IVF treatment, you could get $5,000 back through this tax credit.

The ReproMed team deeply appreciates the Ontario government’s efforts to expand access to publicly funded fertility treatments.
